Filming Day 1

On our first day of filming we decided to first do our base track from different angles so we could have it out the way, and as it the longest piece of filming we would have to do. Everything went to plan and it was quickly finished without any trouble.

We also filmed one our illustrative ideas, which is the lemons as you can see bellow. We had planned to make them look mouldy with paint, however we was faced by some difficulties as it didn’t look natural, so therefore we only bronzed them and when editing them it looked alright so we are considering keeping it.

Test Shots

These are the test shots we took before filming in order to see if the scenery would look appropriate for our music video.

Teacher feedback

Hello group 5
It's really important that you keep up with your blogging - you should be well over 40 by now (hint hint) with the tasks on the check-list plus your own blogs.  I am worried that you will fall very far behind.

Planning for Music Video - Costume

For our artist, we wanted the theme of a normal female dressed in summer-time clothing. The main three clothing we decided on are:

  • Top - Short sleeve checkered shirt
  • Bottom - Mini jean shorts
  • Footwear - Trainers
The image below represents what sort of costume theme we're thinking about:

Planning for Music Video - Artist Name

Coming up with a name for our artist wasn't so hard, but also wasn't so easy. We were looking some something simple and unique which stood out from other artists. We first started off thinking of first names and last names which suited each other but realised it wasn't working. We came up with names such as:
  • Perry Kate (a play on the name Katy Perry)
  • Amelia Lily
  • Ruby Rose
  • + more
These names really never stood out to us but we all concluded and had the agreement on the name Reem. I suggested to the group that something was missing from the artist name, so I put a 'X' after the name as a joke but it started to grow on me and the group as a 'X' can be represented as a kiss; which can be seen as the love she holds towards her song and more importantly, fans. So there we have it, our final conclusion on the name was Reem X.

Planning for Music Video

Today we have planned our schedule for our filming session. We managed to book a day and time which we will all be available on, the days we have decided are Wednesday 19th and Friday 21st. We also booked a time for the green screen where we will film a section of our music video.
We also managed to upload our anamatic onto blogger, as before we were having technical difficulties.

Planning - Name of the Artist

We wanted our artist to have a real understandable simple image and the name is everything, we wanted to name to be original so we title her :

Reem x

One syllable is nice and the x is a kiss for the fans .

Kate Nash Foundations - Song Lyrics !

Thursday night, everything's fine, except you've got that look in your eye
when I'm tellin' a story and you find it boring,
you're thinking of something to say.
You'll go along with it then drop it and humiliate me in front of our friends.

Then I'll use that voice that you find annoyin' and say something like
"yeah, intelligent input, darlin', why don't you just have another beer then?"

Then you'll call me a bitch
and everyone we're with will be embarrassed,
and I wont give a shit.

My fingertips are holding onto the cracks in our foundation,
and I know that I should let go,
but I can't.
And every time we fight I know it's not right,
every time that you're upset and I smile.
I know I should forget, but I can't.

You said I must eat so many lemons
'cause I am so bitter.
I said
"I'd rather be with your friends mate 'cause they are much fitter."

Yes, it was childish and you got aggressive,
and I must admit that I was a bit scared,
but it gives me thrills to wind you up.

My fingertips are holding on to the cracks in our foundation,
and I know that I should let go,
but I can't.
And every time we fight I know it's not right,
every time that you're upset and I smile.
I know I should forget, but I can't.

Your face is pasty 'cause you've gone and got so wasted, what a surprise.
Don't want to look at your face 'cause it's makin' me sick.
You've gone and got sick on my trainers,
I only got these yesterday.
Oh, my gosh, I cannot be bothered with this.

Well, I'll leave you there 'till the mornin',
and I purposely wont turn the heating on
and dear God, I hope I'm not stuck with this one.

My fingertips are holding onto the cracks in our foundation,
and I know that I should let go,
but I can't.
And every time we fight I know it's not right,
every time that you're upset and I smile.
I know I should forget, but I can't.

And every time we fight I know it's not right,
every time that you're upset and I smile.
I know I should forget, but I can't.

Audience Task

The target audience for this video would be the people you enjoy listening and watching, romantic comedy, and indie music and film. Some people that might also include, people that can relate to the narrative, the types to be in relationships.

Polysemic reading of text, could be argued that the male gender is being penalised which entitles a more predominant female audience. Probably aged 14-21.

Planning - 3 Influences

We was inspired by the zooming editing done on this Jay Sean Song '2012' We hoped to incorporate something like that when it comes to our video but using different sceneces, we wanted it to be a sort of motif in our video and a fun way to get from scene to scene.

We also liked this feature in the amazing song 'Friday' By rebecca black the way she brings still images to life in the scene is magical, hope to get this feature in our own video.

This Track by Bruno Mars suprisingly gave us ideas for Mise en Scene on our blog. Seeing as this video is filmed all from one shot, taking in the scenery is a big challenge, however accomplished well its casual with a bed a sofer illistating peices of the song, but the feel of the room is the kind of look we want going on in our main narrative, of the end of the relationship.

Planning - Audience

The target audience for this task is going to be people who enjoy listening and watching, romantic comedy films and indie genre music. Some people that might also include is people that can relate to the narrative for example people that have been in relationships or maybe messy breakups.

The polysemic reading of the text, could be argued that the male gender is being penalised which entitles a more predominant female audience probably aged 14 - 27.

Audience

Our target audience would probably be at the age between 14 – 21 as they will tend to like indie/pop music more. Our target audience will also most likely be a woman, as throughout the video the male gender is being emasculated, which makes the female performer seem more powerful and influential to other women. People watching our video will also enjoy watching romantic and indie films, they will also like other indie music. As the lyrics are describing a relationship falling apart, this is a common experience so our audience might able to relate to the narrative.

3 Influential Music Videos

We have decided to set our music video inside a house; we were influenced by Katy Perry’s ‘Thinking of You’. We think that this setting will go best with our theme and portray the image we want, even though the song lyrics are portraying relationships in different ways, the home feel makes it seem more personal.

We found Jay Sean’s ‘2012’ music video very significant as it influenced us to adapt the zoom they have used in their video, we believe that this would fit in with our video theme and it will look professional. We will be using this editing effect to introduce our setting at the beginning of our music video, where the camera will zoom into the outside of the house and go through into the living room.

We have decided to adapt the idea of using still images which are then transformed into a video, we got this idea from the ‘JCB song’ but Nizlopi. We are going to use this throughout our video and it will be a recurring theme which we believe will capture our audiences attention.

Analysing 3 Music Videos

Jay Sean Ft. Nicki Minaj - 2012

Jay Seans' song has influenced our ideas in editing because similarly to his, we want the 'zoom' effect which will go with the theme for our music video. In his video the audience is set looking at a scene from space, into the land, into the city, and then into the building. We would like to use this effect and make it into our very own motif as a special way to transition scenes to scene instead of a basic typical jump cut.

Beyonce - Countdown

Beyonces' new music video is packed with box-cut edits which has influenced us in using the same kind of effect. This music video has used it as a motif and has created it effectively to suit the theme and colours of the video. We will be using this technique 2/3 times for scenes such as the close ups of facial expressions and a scene with the beers.

Rihanna Ft. Ne-Yo - Hate That I Love You

Rihannas video is one of the many love songs that involve the artist inside a house, or their home. Although her song is a lot more deeper with feelings and emotions, we would like to keep the similar location of our artist being at home.

Storyboard

Analysing the Artist's Website

Kate Nash is clearly very different from commercial artists as this is clearly shown through her website and the way her image and songs are displayed. Kate Nash comes across as unique and unordinary which would clearly appeal to her specific audience. The website allows for her and her fans to interact which would clearly make her more popular with her fans as they will feel a bigger connection to her. She also sells merchandise which can be bought from the website, which will increase her popularity with her fans and make her more well known.

The pictures which are included on the website make the artist seem more down to earth and friendly, they also clearly show the artist as exclusive and different.

Analysis of Original Video

The original video is very well planned and edited, which is why it is such a successful music video. The camera work is basic and the video doesn’t consist of a wide range of shot types it mainly stays a close up, which makes us focus more on the artist and song it’s self. The editing of the music video is very well done and uses a number of recurring ideas throughout, for example showing the separation between the two through the toothbrushes at the beginning and the sock unravelling.

Even though we have decided to also do an illustrative video we have tried to make ours more unique and different from the original. For example we are using a completely different concept, and we want more creative editing throughout our music video.
